The seminar would focus on what needs to be done to boost the production and productivity of the sector while addressing the challenges facing its stakeholders.

Dairy production in India:

  • Despite being a large producer of milk and poultry products, India’s livestock sector faces challenges such as low productivity and high costs, while bearing the frequent impact of disease.

  • India is now the largest producer of milk with around 188 million tonnes recorded for 2018-19. But more than 50 percent of that milk comes from the unorganized sector, which has a high prevalence of malnutrition in less breed improvement animals. This means that India is still not able to fully exploit the potential of its available cattle resources.

  • According to the Union Government’s National Dairy Action Plan, India’s milk production is expected to reach 300 million tonnes by 2023-24, for which milk production is to grow at a healthy rate of 8.5 percent per year compared to the current growth of about 6.5 percent.

  • In addition, the Indian cattle population is growing at a slow rate of 1 percent.

  • There is a greater need for the development of high yielding breeds.

  • However, due to the highly disorganized nature of the livestock sector, government-led nutrition programs, breeding initiatives and yield improvement have limited effect.
