BARIPADA: Elephants crossing into neighboring states have caused damage to lives and property worth thousands of dollars. The Forest Department must devise measures to prevent further damage, urged Zilla Parishad, chairman of Mayurbhanj Bharati Hansdah.

At an annual review meeting on the implementation of various programs within the Baripada Territorial Forestry Division under JICA for the 2021-22 fiscal year on Wednesday, she said the department faces various challenges such as forest fires, animal poaching and the movement of elephants from neighboring states. Since elephants move to human settlements in search of food, the department must preserve forests and embark on plantations.

Regional Chief Conservator of Forests (RCCF) and Field Manager of Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) T Ashok Kumar said that despite the challenges, the Forest Department has made good efforts. Many developments have been carried out by the department thanks to forest co-management with the inhabitants of the forest. He also appreciated the role of JICA and VSS in forest management.
Baripada DFO Santosh Joshi also spoke on this occasion.
