New Delhi: Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India hosted a webinar on “Major Disease Problems in Freshwater Aquaculture and its Management” on 28e August 2021 under the chairmanship of Jatindra Nath Swain, Secretary, Fisheries Department, Government of India under Azadi ka Amrit Mohatsav. Swain in his inaugural address briefly touched on the revolution and the development of India since independence. He informed the assembly that the Indian Government’s Fisheries Department is organizing a series of webinars on the eve of 75 years of independence. Today’s webinar focused on the management of major diseases in freshwater aquaculture and their management. Swain highlighted the contribution of freshwater aquaculture to the country’s fish production. He briefly explained the PMMSY and the sub-component supported under the PMMSY for disease management in freshwater aquaculture in the country.
Sagar Mehra, Co-Secretary (Inland Fisheries) and Dr J. Balaji, Co-Secretary (Marine Fisheries) also spoke during the webinar. Other officials from the Department of Fisheries, GoI and state fisheries officials / UTs, professors from state agricultural universities, state animal and fisheries universities, entrepreneurs, aquaculturists and hatchery owners across the country, aquaculture industry representatives participated in the webinar.
Sagar Mehra, JS (IF) briefly highlighted the importance and challenges of disease management in freshwater aquaculture in India. He also highlighted the government initiatives for the sector through the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). In addition, Mehra added that financial assistance has been provided to institutions, farmers and entrepreneurs for disease management in freshwater aquaculture under the PMMSY. In his speech, Dr J. Balaji highlighted the issues farmers face due to disease and emphasized strategy and planning to overcome disease management and aquatic health issues.
Dr. Pramoda Kumar Sahoo, Senior Scientist, ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture gave a detailed presentation on the major disease issues in freshwater aquaculture in India and their management. In his presentation, he highlighted the important issues related to fish diseases and losses due to diseases. In addition, he explains in detail the disease management measures, problems and concerns of the fish health sector and made some suggestions for better health management.
After the presentation, a fruitful interaction with farmers, entrepreneurs, hatchery owners, scientists and university professors was initiated. Dr PK Sahoo, Senior Scientist, ICAR-CIFA led the discussion with stakeholders. Stakeholders raised various disease and health management issues at the farm level that they face. Dr Sahoo suggested appropriate management actions on the issues raised by stakeholders. Officials from DoF, GoI explained the components of PMMSY for disease management in freshwater aquaculture, such as establishing disease diagnostic and quality testing laboratories and mobile laboratories, aquatic laboratories in benchmark for quality testing and disease diagnosis, effective aquatic health management system, strengthening disease surveillance and surveillance program, establishing aquatic quarantine facilities, etc.
