A mega planting campaign was held at SKUAST-K in Ganderbal
Srinagar Mar 25: (KNS) A mega planting campaign was organized by Faculty of Forestry, Benhama-Watlar, Ganderbal, SKUAST-K on Friday at University Camps in collaboration with Department of Forestry, Government of Jammu and Kashmir and Rahim Greens, with this year’s theme “Forests and Sustainable Production and Consumption”.
The guest of honor on this occasion was Sanjeev Verma (IAS), Commissioner Secretary, Forest, Ecology and Environment, Govt. of J&K. The Guest of Honor was Prof. (Dr) NAGanai, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-K, Dr. Mohit Gera (IFS), Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forestry Force, Government. by J&K and Dr. Gouranga Kar, Director of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) – Central Research Institute of Jute and Allied Fibers, Kolkata.
The program began with a welcome speech by the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry, Prof. Sajad A Gangoo, who highlighted the importance of forestry education in the country and the role played by the Faculty since its inception. Sanjeev Verma planted Chinar saplings on this occasion. He appreciated the efforts of the Faculty of Forestry in organizing such events. He told the students to identify the places where they needed to continue the research part. The Forest Department will be happy to assist them in their research.
On the occasion after planting some saplings, Dr. Gouranga Kar said that the Jute institute would be happy to have a collaboration with the skuast-k to work in some fiber fields. He told the students to study hard in their subject and take the help of computer tools to carry out further research. He said plastic has taken its toll and needs to be replaced with natural fibers.
Dr. Mohit Gera said on the occasion that I am happy to be part of this event at the Faculty of Forestry. He insisted on the students to compete for the competitions and prove your worth. If you work hard, you will definitely excel in your fields and don’t rely on reservations and concessions in jobs. The Honorable Vice Chancellor Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai said on the occasion that I am happy that this young faculty is growing day by day and that we are now celebrating World Forestry Day and this mega plantation campaign in is part. He enjoyed the role of Rahim Greens who pledged to plant a million plants in the near future.
He told the students that knowledge is at your fingertips and you have to believe in yourself. He thanked Dr. Mohit Gera for his inspiring speech and thanked him for approving the projects submitted by our scientists. The challenge of greening this southern slope will be a model to be used throughout the region.
The mega planting program was attended by about 600 students from the Faculty of Forestry, Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry, Horticulture and Fisheries who planted 5000 saplings of pinus and broadleaf species. Deans and associate deans of all faculties participated in the program. Director of Education, Prof. MN Khan, Prof. Dil M Makhdoomi, Director of Extension, Prof. Tariq H Masoodi, Registrar also participated in the program. (KNS)
